A member of the Engineering Team who is responsible for engineering analysis, design, component specification, detailing, and checking as required. Products include, but may not be limited to welding machinery, special tooling and ancillary equipment.  Applies principles of mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials to machine design.

Position Overview

Designs, develops, and tests all aspects of mechanical and fluid components, equipment, and machinery. Applies knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as engines, instruments, controls, robots, machines, etc. May be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products. May require a bachelor's degree in engineering and 0-3 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  1. Prepares mechanical design, and detail drawings using 3D CAD and other engineering tools, laboratory equipment and engineering analysis software.
  2. Prepares detailed lists of parts, detail drawings, and materials (bills of materials) required to complete the project, as required.
  3. Reviews and closely follows customer specifications and requirements for machines, tooling and automation during manufacture of machines, tooling and automation.
  4. Continuously reviews/improves engineering processes.
  5. Helps develop strategies and processes to ensure on-time delivery of equipment, cost reduction opportunities and performance improvements.
  6. Good working knowledge of designing and specifying components for high-force machines and handling systems.
  7. Understanding of manufacturing environment, including machining processes, workflow, assembly processes, cycle time and quality and delivery expectations.

  9. May be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products.
  10. Perform other assignments, as requested by supervisor or manager.
  11. Advise and recommend future technical and/or operational direction and process improvements as related to this function.
  12. Design fluid power circuits for industrial machinery, meeting US and international codes: NFPA, CE, ISO, etc.
  13. Specify electric motors, couplings, pumps, valves, manifolds, filters and other key fluid power components.
  14. Perform calculations for electric motor RMS, sizing for valves, pumps, pressure drop, hydraulic motor, line size, flow rates and other analysis as required.
  15. Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics calculations.
  16. Assist in start-up and troubleshooting of fluid power systems.


Required Skills and Competencies

  1. Must have excellent communication skills
  2. Computer skills; SolidWorks (preferred), AutoCAD 2D, and Microsoft Office products
  3. Must have background with 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks or similar 3D software
  4. Ability to read mechanical drawings and fluid schematics and understand dimensional tolerances
  5. Hydraulic circuit design experience
  6. Component hardware and specification
  7. Ability to perform fluid sizing calculations
  8. Integrated system design
  9. Must be eligible to work in the UK permanently
  10. Must conduct oneself with the highest level of professional and ethical standards
  11. Must have clean UK driving license

Preferred Skills or Competencies

  1. Design experience on high-force equipment/heavy equipment or Machine Tool-type equipment
  2. Design experience with industrial equipment and automation
  3. Proportional or Servo hydraulic experience
  4. Mechanical design of hydraulic power units
  5. Background with PDM (Product Data Management) system (preferably SolidWorks PDM)
  6. Foreign Language experience helpful (Russian, Chinese, EU Language, French, Spanish, German, etc.)
  7. Problem solving expertise
  8. Passion and enthusiasm for innovation
  9. Excellent written and verbal skills
  10. Computer/Microsoft Office proficiency
  11. Ability to incorporate manufacturing and cost effectiveness into new designs


Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to perform general office-related activities.
  2. Frequently required to sit.  Moderately require to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl.
  3. Use hands for purposes of keyboarding; handle or feel.
  4. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 14Kg [30lbs].
