Additive Manufacturing Research Engineer

As part of its continued expansion, a high-tech scientific business in Daresbury is seeking a highly capable Additive Manufacturing Research Engineer to join their dynamic and innovative team.

Based at the new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in Daresbury, the successful applicant will be responsible for the deployment, development and use of additive manufacturing technologies across multiple projects taking place.

You will be engaging with emerging manufacturing processes in the field of polymer and ceramic additive manufacturing technologies to deliver transformational performance improvements for water treatment and separation solutions. The role will support product development through the entire cycle, including design, lab-scale prototyping and data analysis, pilot-scale manufacturing and testing, industrial validation and commercial scale-up.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • Researching, developing and designing new structures for additive manufacturing of polymer, ceramic and metal-based water treatment and separation systems and components
  • Preparing and modifying CAD geometries for different additive manufacturing techniques
  • Setting up, using and maintaining in-house additive manufacturing printers to produce components for projects
  • Developing appropriate post process methods to give final component the required properties
  • Working with the R&D team to design, conduct and validate experiments to confirm results
  • Providing accurate and detailed reports of experiments and data
  • Presenting findings/results/innovations to project stakeholders and management
  • Working closely with third parties and manufacturers to deliver project milestones
  • Working across multiple projects to provide technical expertise in additive manufacturing

Candidate requirements:

The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Degree in engineering or other relevant degree
  • Experience working with additive manufacturing technology
  • Experience in the use of VAT photopolymerization printers (SLA/DLP/LCD), binder jetting and powder-bed fusion (SLS/SLM)
  • 3D CAD design experience
  • Experience in designing DOE’s and material testing
  • At ease working in groups, individually and with industrial collaborators
  • Quick learner, able to adapt to a rapidly changing, innovative environment
  • Able to think critically and solve problems
  • Competent PC user with experience of using Microsoft products
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Flexible approach and attitude to working as part of a small entrepreneurial team
