About this position:
This client provide engineering solutions in electric powertrains and have a background in high-performance engineering. With business streams in battery systems, electric/hybrid drivetrains and control systems they are able to offer services from concept through to low volume production within the Automotive, Motorsport, Marine and Military sectors. As a member of the Controls & Simulation team, the Senior Controls Engineer would be contributing to the successful development of Platform Master Control (PMC) software for customer prototype and demonstrator vehicle systems. A primary focus will be on on high-performance systems, the software developed will be for a range of battery or hybrid vehicle applications (automotive, motorsport, marine, aerospace, and off-highway), implementing and building on the current tools, coding according to our internal guidelines and tested within our internal safety standards at a prototype vehicle level.
- This role will suit a candidate that will work well in a team, able to communicate with other departments, and take initiative to think “outside of the box” to resolve some of the unique challenges we face on our prototype development systems.
Responsibilities:
- Development of Platform Master Control (PMC) software in MathWorks’ MATLAB/Simulink environment.
- Vehicle system integration to configure vehicle components to work together on prototype platforms.
- Communication with the Systems team on testing requirements to feed component validation.
- Communication with the Electrical & Electronics team on PMC hardware pinout allocation, component selection & device suitability.
- Communication with workshop/build team on vehicle commissioning issues.
- Responsible for vehicle control system during commissioning & testing.
- Able to be flexible on work location and prepared to travel within the UK and internationally on short assignments.
- Documenting & reporting vehicle system architecture and software developments to the Head of Controls & Simulation
- Consider the health and safety, environmental and energy impact of all activities.
- Support the Company’s compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018, following policy and best practice.
Required:
- Knowledge of electric & hybrid powertrain system architectures
- Experience of using model-based development languages such as MATLAB & Simulink
- Awareness of embedded software for microcontrollers in C
- Knowledge of electric powertrain system components sufficiently to produce software drivers, such as inverter torque control, DCDC control, battery control, LV power distribution / body control, AC & DC charger control, thermal management, brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire.
- Experience with testing & commissioning electric & hybrid powertrain systems on vehicles.
- Ability to generate vehicle system commissioning & validation sign-off plans.
- Fill out Risk Assessments for activities, complete and follow any Safe Systems of Work within accordance of our internal Safety Management System.
- Able to effectively communicate issues & problems faced throughout the development process, from early system specification, right through to vehicle commissioning & testing.
- Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline
- Experience of working on High Voltage systems, particularly in powertrains at 400/800V.
- Familiar with workshop equipment, vehicle operation safety, and dyno test facilities
- Familiar with prototype ECUs in MathWorks environment such as Pi Innovo’s OpenECU, dSpace, New Eagles’ Raptor, etc.
- Familiar with measurement, calibration & diagnostic CAN software tools such as Vector’s software suite (CANalyser, CANape, CANoe).
- Exposure to other coding languages (C, C++, C#, Python)
- Familiar with good software practices, coding standards, version control/management, issue tracking, and testing
- Basic knowledge of electronics & embedded microcontrollers (Texas Instruments, Microchip, NXP)
