Senior Geophysicist
Position: Senior Geophysicist
Qualification: Degree in Geoscience or Geophysics.
Location: Work from home in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, or Norway
About the Client
The client is an ocean data company specializing in collecting data for a variety of purposes, including seabed mapping and environmental monitoring. Unlike conventional crewed survey ships, the client employs a marine robotic system known as an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) to gather this data.
Overview
This full-time role involves responsibility for geophysical data processing, interpretation, reporting, and line management of junior colleagues over a 40-hour workweek. You will be at the forefront of the rapidly evolving USV market, working with a world-leading company with clear career progression opportunities.
In addition to your salary and remote working benefits, you will receive annual leave entitlement, a pension scheme, access to private healthcare, and a yearly bonus scheme based on company and personal performance.
Working for the client, you will handle various datasets and integrate them to analyze and interpret seabed conditions. This includes understanding practical applications for clients, such as the implications of sediment types for offshore installations and the impact of UXO on subsea developments. The client’s operations span globally, from Qatar to the US, supported by a large fleet of state-of-the-art USVs equipped with top-spec survey-grade equipment. Their commitment to continuous improvement and expansion creates an ambitious and exciting work environment.
Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Line management of a small team of junior geophysicists
  • Developing processing workflows for new and existing datasets to improve processing efficiency
  • Processing and interpreting shallow SBP (Innomar) data
  • Processing magnetometer data in Oasis Montaj
  • Processing side scan sonar data, including seabed picking, interpretation, mosaic production, and identifying seabed features
  • Creating and quality-controlling final deliverables to a high standard
  • Performing real-time quality control by liaising with the online team and monitoring data using survey tools
  • Liaising with sub-contractors, clients, and the project team to ensure project goals are met
  • Writing final and interim reports

On occasion, this role may involve:

  • Remote data acquisition and processing of MBES, side-scan sonar, and shallow sub-bottom profiler (Innomar) sensors
  • Survey system setup, including hardware and software configuration prior to vessel mobilization
  • Supporting bathymetry and pseudo side-scan sonar processing
  • Assisting the Lead Geophysicist with planning and resourcing requirements
  • Implementing, maintaining, and updating standard operating procedures and processes
  • Managing and maintaining quality, environmental, and health and safety standards, including ISO processes

Requirements: Essential Skills / Attributes and Experience

  • Degree in Geoscience or Geophysics
  • Experience in acquisition and processing of side-scan sonar, magnetometer, and shallow sub-bottom sensors
  • Proficiency in processing software packages like Chesapeake SonarWiz, Moga Seaview, DUG Insight, and Oasis Montaj
  • Experience in side-scan sonar processing, including seabed picking, target identification, tagging, and listing, and creating navigationally and gain-corrected mosaics
  • Proficiency in Innomar data processing, including SEGy conversion, tidal reduction, denoise filtering, gain control, and exporting processed SEGy data, with experience in data interpretation and exporting subsurface horizons and contact hyperbolas
  • Experience in magnetometer processing, including navigation filtering, creating residual and analytical signal grids, and producing target listings and project-specific deliverables
  • 4+ years of marine survey experience
  • Strong computer literacy for configuring sensor equipment
  • Enthusiastic, positive, and proactive nature with keen attention to detail

Desirable Experience

  • Coding and scripting experience in Python, C/C++, or MATLAB
  • GIS experience, including Global Mapper and QGIS; knowledge of ARC GIS and AutoCad is advantageous
  •  Experience in bathymetry data acquisition and processing
  • Experience with marine survey data acquisition and processing software (e.g., QINSy, Qimera, EIVA)
  • Relevant marine qualifications such as Yachtmaster, Coastal Skipper, ICC (or equivalent)
